The book begins when two evil rats kidnap a kid and some kittens and its up to Jack and Guy to rescue them. At first, they challenge the rats to the tats to a game of Bridge to get them back, but they lose the rats. Just as the rats take their hostage to the bakery the kid jumps out os their grasp but gets bitten in the process while trying to get to Jack and Guy. The moon, angry at the harsh treatment, carries the boys off and drops them in rye field. Later the moon, in the form of a cat, helps the boys get the kid some bread and kill the rats. Jack and Guy return home and decide to raise the kid themselves.
