The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum.

A young girl named Dorothy is surrounded entirely by a grey world, with only a black dog named Toto to keep her cheerful. Her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry don't understand her at all. When a cyclone comes through their peaceful Kansas farm, it pulls up the whole house with Dorothy and Toto in it. They are soon planted in a marvelous world of magic, talking animals, winged monkeys, and an old humbug. Now with new friends at her side, Dorothy is on a quest to find a way home.

Reader's Reviews

This book is said to be the first real American fairy tale and it lives up to its name. It doesn't beat reading the original classic fairy tales of Europe, but it does a swell job nonetheless. The different lands are intriguing, the characters are delightful, and the whole thing is exquisitely done. The book is better than any of its parodies or adaptations and, despite what Dorothy says, the land of Oz feels like home. It is a fantastical place, that just makes a whole series of fairy tales into one land specifically, without being a generic kingdom, once upon a time.
