All the other squirrels are respectful to an owl named Old Brown, all but Nutkin. The others give Old Brown gifts while asking to gather acorns from Old Brown's island, while Nutkin just asks riddles. Nutkin spends his days playing instead of gathering and gets more and more disrespectful. Finally, Nutkin jumps toward Old Brown and Old Brown catches him and almost kills him. Nutkin escapes without half his tail, and never wants to hear a riddle again!

Nutkin loses part of his tail but it isn't too disturbing and it is well deserved.
