The book has three main characters, who are all bear cubs. Kallik, a young polar bear, watches her mother perish, and is separated from her brother as the ice melts beneath their feet. Toklo, a brown grizzly bear, is abandoned by his mother and must learn to fend for himself. And Lusa, a small black bear, is in a zoo. Faced with killer whales, fiercely territorial bears, starvation and the worst danger of all – humans – can the cubs survive?
