Ojo the Unlucky knows nothing of the outside world. For years he has lived in the forest with only his Uncle, Unc Nunkie for company. Finally, they absolutely can not live at home anymore because they couldn't get enough food from their gardens to feed themselves. They travel to their only neighbor's house, the home of a Crooked Magician who is the only one that can make the Powder of Life. He is busy making more of his powder to bring a servant to life for his wife, but Ojo messes with the amount of brains given to the Patchwork Girl. She spills, accidentally, a liquid that turned the Crooked Magician's wife and Unc Nunkie into marble statues. Ojo must now go on a quest to find ingredients to make an antidote, while the Crooked Magician sets to work on more Powder of Life. Their only issue is that anyone but Ozma, Glinda, and the Wizard, is banned from practicing magic. Soon Ojo is even sent to jail, becoming the first prisoner of Oz as far as anyone knows.

Reader's Reviews

The Patchwork Girl gets a little annoying, but she can't help it: she doesn't have a heart! Her brains were given in an overdose, but in such a mess that she has instances of craziness, as Ojo would say. She isn't so bad, and the Scarecrow even calls her beautiful. A very neat book for the Oz series, adding greatly to the number of wacky characters and wacky countries within Oz.
