The Lorax is a children's picture book, written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss, and published in 1971. The book was adapted into an animated musical television special, first aired in the United States on February 14, 1972. It was later adapted into a computer-animated 3-D feature film, which was released on March 2, 2012. Despite mixed reviews,[1] the film was a success at the box-office, earning $70.7 million in its opening weekend in the United States, a new record for a Universal Pictures animation.[2] The film remained at number one the following weekend.[3]
The book itself is a fable about the dangers of destroying forests, as the long-suffering Lorax tries to save the trees from the wicked Once-ler. As is common with Seuss' books, it features fantastical creatures and rhyming text.
The book has been controversial with some groups since its publication. It was published at the start of the environmental movement, and considering its content, it is generally considered as a comment on the exploitation of the natural world. The Lorax also contains elements of a critique of capitalism—it is implied the Once-ler relies on aggressive advertising to sell his product Thneed made from trees. The book has been criticised by some business groups for its overt message, even leading to its banning from some schools and libraries.[4]
