The Land of Elyon is a children's fantasy series, written by Patrick Carman, and published in 2004–2008. The series is comprised of five books. The original trilogy follows the adventures of 12-year-old Alexa Daley, and consists of The Dark Hills Divide, Beyond the Valley of Thorns and The Tenth City. In 2007, a prequel was published, called Into the Mist. Its protagonist was a character in the earlier books. A fourth book about Alexa, Stargazer, was published in 2008, set chronologically after The Tenth City.
In The Dark Hills Divide, twelve-year-old Alexa Daley is spending another summer in Bridewell with her father. She looks forward to exploring the old lodge where she stays each year, with its cozy library and maze of passages and rooms. She's also eager to finally solve the mystery of what lies beyond the immense walls that were built to keep out an unnamed evil that lurks in the forests and the Dark Hills—an evil the townspeople are afraid to speak about. After her first adventure, Alexa discovers the evil that threatens the Land of Elyon is far more terrible than she thought. And the part she has to play is greater than she could have ever imagined...
