Riding Tycho is a science fiction novel, written by Jan Mark, and published in 2005. It describes the life of 11-year-old Demetria, who is one of the inhabitants of an isolated island, surrounded by a huge sea. The government sends political prisoners to the island, and encourages the islanders to look after them.
The silent darkness was ripped apart by the strident shriek that rose and fell and rose again. Demetria has never questioned her harsh life on High Island. The endless rules, merciless bullying and the scream of the Banshee announcing another doomed escape across the sea are all she has ever known. But then she meets political prisoner Ianto Morgan, who tells her about a strange and distant world full of stories and freedom. Demetria is captivated by the possibility of a life without limits, but is Ianto telling the truth, or is he fooling her with dangerous lies?
Whatever the cost, Demetria knows she must find out...
When I first started this book, I didn't know how it was all going to turn out, but once I got into it, it was fantastic. I really want to read the sequel, Voyager. There are rules like "Girls can't swim. They weren't made too". And Demetria lived her life believing these rules. So when Ianto Morgan tells her anyone can swim, Demetria thinks he is joking—but one day she tries swimming... but I won't tell you too much... Go get that book and read it!!!
