Kensington Gardens is described, with the visitors, inhabitants, and landscape. Peter Pan's beginning is mentioned. He flies from his home (children are originally birds) and lands on an island in Kensington Gardens. He lives with a wise bird and knows little of how children really play with toys. He soon hires the birds to build a giant nest boat so he can go back and forth from the land to the island. He makes friends with a normal human girl, who teaches him and gives him a goat.
Kensington Gardens also has many fairies, who come in different colors and only come out after closing time. They occasionally make friends with the children who are accidentally locked in the park and build houses around them to keep them warm and safe.
