Helen Lyndon Goff was born in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia to Travers Robert Goff and Margaret Morehead. She greatly admired J. M. Barrie and his book, Peter Pan which would inspire her to do her Mary Poppins series.

The Mary Poppins books made her famous and she was made as creative advisor for the film version to which she dissapproved of. After the film's release Travers did all she could to prevent another Poppins/Disney adaptation of her books.
