I just wanted to let you know about a conversation I have had with one of the Wikia Contributors. (108.8.10.181) You can see the conversation on my message wall. Basically, the contributor said that the two articles he made D.W. the Whistler and D.W. Learns About Multi-Culturalism are just about books he would like to be published not books that are published. For this reason I have deleted the two pages. I hope this is okay.
I just wanted to let you know that A Wikia Contributer (98.199.8.108) has been makeing new pages with no content. I'm not sure if this is exceptible or not.
This is quite a regular occurrence, unfortunately. Normally I just leave them up, and get round to editing them at some point. After all, they all contribute to the page count. :)
Hello, i saw your wikia in the featured section and i took a look, and from it it looks great but do you have a lexile range group? i know you have an age but a lexile range for books would be very neat.
Thanks for your message. Sorry for being a little slow to reply!
I have to admit, I had never heard of the Lexile reading system before. I have just looked it up, and yes, I think it would be excellent if we added it - the more information we have, the better. If you want to add it, please feel free. It might also be worth putting a link to the Lexile page in the "External Links" section.
Chosen could be in:
Books published in 2007
Books by Ted Dekker
Books originally released in the United States
Images could also have categories.
File:Ted_Dekker.jpg could be in:
Images of authors
Images of Science fiction authors
Images of Christian fiction authors
File:Ted Dekker- Chosen.jpg could be in:
Book covers
Book covers of Ted Dekker books
Book covers of Fantasy books
Book covers of Christian fiction books
Would any of those categories be helpful do you think?
I really don't think we need "Authors born in..." categories. There simply aren't enough authors to make it worthwhile. Plus, I can't really imagine people being interested in browsing through those categories.
I think "Books published in..." categories are okay - I can imagine people using them. Can I suggest we simplify it to just the year, though? So we'd have 2012, 2011, etc. I think this would acheive the same result with less words (and time!)
"Books released in..." - Yeah, I guess we could have this. I think this isn't as useful as above, because largely most of them are going to be either United States or United Kingdom, so we're going to end up with several really large categories. But feel free to create these if you want to.
Image categories - I've never categorised images, just because I don't think it's particularly important. Why would somebody want to browse our images? We normally only have one per article anyway, so I wouldn't particularly recommend this one. I have got a thing called Category Exhibition turned on on this wiki, as well; this is an extra feature which displays all the articles in the category as thumbnail images. (Have a look at the categories on here, and you should see it.) I think that is the best way of browsing the images on the wiki.
Thanks again for all your edits! You're doing a fantastic job! I promise to get round to having a proper look at them soon!
Books released in: yes
Ex:Books released in the United States
Image categories: no
Sounds good!
P. S. Would you like to have an article for every year in which there would be sections for Artists born in ____ (The year the article is for), Artists died in ____, and Books published in ____.
Hello! I made a page for Ted Dekker's book Chosen and I wondered if you could help me a little with it. Under Description I put the summary on the back of the book. Do I need to say somewhere that that is where I got the summary? If so where and how? Also there is another book cover for chosen (here). Is there a way I can have both covers on the page? Thanks!- PrincessGLG 14:36, April 26, 2012 (UTC)
Firstly, thanks for your two page creations. They really are great - I so appreciate people who use the page structure. :) And you've even categorised them! The pages really are superb, some of the best quality I've seen of new page creations. Thank you!
To answer your questions: under description, I normally put i) a brief summary of the book; something like, "The City of Ember is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel, written by Jeanne DuPrau, and published in 2003. The novel is the first in the publication order of The Books of Ember series, with the next book to be published in the series being The People of Sparks. Chronologically, it is the second book in the series." (That's the introduction from The City of Ember.) Then, as you've done, add the book summary so that people get a taste of what the book is about.
I've never bothered about putting where the summaries come from - they probably are copyright, but I can't imagine anybody seriously objecting - it's free advertising for the book publisher and author isn't it?
I don't usually add multiple book covers, but if you want to, feel free. Just add it into the page somewhere!
I hope that answers your questions. If you have any other questions, just let me know!
Please look at this FarmVille conversation I'm having issues with. The edit I made was removed and it's very important to me that that information is included!! Please help me! http://farmville.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:101925
First off, I've never played FarmVille, so I'm shooting in the dark somewhat but here goes...
As I understand it, you think information should be added to "Limited Edition" plants that Triple XP was/is available during "Player Appreciation Weeek". The argument against this is that the Triple XP during Player Appreciation Week applies to all plants. So it is pointless to say so on individual pages.
I think my advice would be: 1) to repeat your point that you think it is worth adding this information only to the Limited Edition plants, and 2) if there is still a consensus of disagreement with you, unfortunately, I think you'll have to let it go.
I found some good suggestions on amazon and some of the suggestions we're mine.
I was wondering if it would be possible to add a list of all the recently published versions of Alice and Wonderland especially collectible versions.
Yep, if you want to add recent versions, go for it. I generally don't just because I have limited time, so I try to make sure I cover the more important stuff; but improving our information is always good!
My name is Kate and I'm a member of Wikia Staff. I run the social media accounts for several of Wikia's communities. Are you the person who runs @BooksWiki?
Ooops sorry I had forgotten that I asked you :) I was just wondering since I love hearing about community-run Twitter accounts and I'm running several of them at the moment! It looks like it's doing really well :)
No problem. :) I try my best - I get a reasonably regular stream of new followers, so it must be doing okay! If you have any tips or help, let me know. Which Twitter accounts do you run?
I think the best advice I can give is to be engaging and present on Twitter :) RTs, questions, responses are always helpful, especially with something as broad as books and children's books.
I currently run @HungerGamesWiki @TrueBloodWiki @GleeWiki @WikiaAnime, and quite a few others, some with the help of Wikia's community members.
Do you think there should be a seperate category for books that were aimed for children but have been devoured by people of all ages? For example, Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games... There are so many more books in this category...
I think that's a great idea, I can definitely see what you're getting at. What would you call it? Feel free to create it if you can think of a catchy name! (As it's a category, it's probably best to keep it short.)
Thanks, Bethel23 (talk) 21:16, March 28, 2012 (UTC)
Is Children of All Ages to long? Also, how do I create a category? Also, that might be too ambiguous. I can't really think of a category name that's short enough that combines the two ideas...
I was looking at the categories page and I think this wiki would be extremely sucessfull if there was a section for books that became movies or tv shows (or comics or anime) again, I don't know what to title this category or even how to make a category, so I would appreciate you telling me how or if this is appropriate.
I agree that "Children of All Ages" is too ambiguous. It could be understood to mean that the book is suitable for a variety of children's ages, rather than the intended meaning, which is that the book is enjoyed by adults as well as children, despite being written for children/young adult audience. How about "Children's books for adults"? I know it's not exactly short, but at least it makes its point clear!
How to create a category: go to the page you wish to add. Click "add category" down the bottom of the page. Type the name of the category you want to add the page to, and click "Save". Now you should have your category listed along the bottom of the page, along with all the other categories. However, your new one will be red. Now click on that, and you'll be taken to a "Create a new page" thing. Type something like, "This is a category for...", and save that. Done!
I hope the above makes sense! Let me know if you want me to do it!
I think your suggestion of a category for books that have been adapted into other media is a very good idea, I'm very happy to help you making that. Shall we just call it "Adaptations" - that would cover cross-media things, like you're talking about.
Thanks for your suggestions! It's very encouraging for me to have another enthusiastic editor here. :)
This wiki is the most welcoming wiki, so I look forward to editing more and suggesting more ideas! I will add that category when I can access my computer, but I can still communicate via iPhone, so if you need my opinion about anything or want me to do a review let me know. How did you like my review of Catching Fire?
It's a great review of Catching Fire, thanks. I've just added a bit to the page, have a look! I'll hopefully get round to adding some pages to your categories in the next few days.
Sorry to ask you to do this, but I've tried adding this edit several times and for some reason it won't save my edit. This is for the other books you might enjoy section of Catching Fire. Feel free to add or change it. I liked what you did to the page, but I felt like Legend and Fahrenheit 451 belonged on this list.
==If you like this you might like== *Catching Fire is the middle part of The Hunger Games trilogy: the final novel in the series is Mockingjay. *The City of Ember, another story of post-apocalyptic science fiction. *Lord of the Flies, despite being written 50 years before The Hunger Games, is somewhat similar. It is a tale of a group of British children stranded on a desert island, who try to govern themselves. The result is a shocking and disturbing story of their descent into savagery. * Legend by Marie Lu, is another dystopian novel written for young adults. It is written from two different characters points of view and switches between them. It is also about a rebellion in the future. * Fahrenheit 451 was not written for children, but I think it can be enjoyed by readers ages 14 and up. This novel was about firefighters that instead of putting out fires, burn books. Set in the future, the main character Guy Montag has to come to grips with the fact that burning books is an evil thing, and he was brainwashed into doing evil things. Written by Ray Bradbury, anyone liking dystopia would probably like this book.
I think you had, in fact, added it. You just had some extra HTML code in there that you didn't need. Anyway, I think I've sorted it. And I totally agree with you about Fahrenheit 451 - one of my favourite books ever, and definitely good for older teenagers.
I have since tried to edit Harry Potter for adding a reader review and it seems that I'm having difficulties keeping my edits. Now that I've checked the page, it seems to be there, but something is not working for me when I try to submit my changes. Hope everything is working for everyone else.....
I saw on your profile there were a lot of dead links.... Are those links anywhere else? I would find them useful for navigating these pages. I'm only interested in editing books that I have read or want to read, so if the book is aimed at a 5 year old, count me out. I think having a link saying this is for children 13+ is really useful.
Hi,
Thanks for your response! Sorry for confusing you with that stuff on my profile - that was old testing ages ago! I've removed it all now. As for child's age, Children's Books Wiki is for children aged 0-16; we've got plenty of books for the older ages. Here are some (real) links for you!
Age Groups - this lists all the age categories. Click on any one to see the full list. (Age 13 currently has 319 books in it.)
Book Categories - a complete list of all the categories on the wiki, probably the best way of browsing.
Hope that helps! If you have any questions, let me know!
Thanks,
Bethel23.
Hi, this is a nice wiki, I don't know much, but I will do what I can, to contribute to this wiki, I won't be on much, but if you ever need to chat, I am here for a chat.
Hi Metardis, sorry for the delay in answering your question.
What do you want to change? If you want to change the links contained in the bar, you'll need to edit MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation. (All the links are to Just William wiki, by the way.)
If you want to change the colours, you can change them in the Theme Designer.
For more customisation, you'll have to use the CSS page: go to MediaWiki:Wikia.css.
You can see CBW's CSS page here: MediaWiki:Wikia.css. The code that reads .WikiHeaderRestyle is the part that changes the Navigation bar.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions!
I made some Horrible Histories pages about the books, so I was wondering if you could get some photos?
Also, I was thinking we have a page count somewhere so we know how close we are to our target of 1000.
Thanks a lot! I've added images to some of them, and I'll finish off in the next few days. There is actually a page count near the top of the page on every book page - it's next to "search this wiki" (it currently stands at 736).
Whenever I post my signature it doesn't work as it's a template, but the template is actually called Jammiedodger123 CHAT MODERATOR Sig! So it really fits in, so I was wondering if I could make it? I understand if I can't.
If this wiki gets more traffic, we could have weekly/monthly competitions to do with writing. For example, there could be one to write a paragraph on what it was like living in WWII, and it could say Good Books: Horrible Histories: Blitzed Brits, and others like that.
That's a cool idea, but I think we'd have to have more user to make it worthwhile... one thing we could do is have a "Featured category" on the main page - for example, WWII, and then maybe change monthly.
The other thing I'd like to do is make Diary of a Wimpy Kid a "Featured article". I set a limit of five reviews for a book to become a featured article, and Wimpy Kid just passed that mark. So with a bit more work, we could make that a featured article. (We currently have two featured articles, by the way - The Chronicles of Narnia and The City of Ember. Wimpy Kid would need to be of a similar quality.)
And while we're on the subject of future targets, the other one I've set is this: I want to reach 1000 articles by the end of 2012. This is fairly ambitious, but I reckon we can do it. :) And it's always good to aim for something!
Yes, I saw the featured articles. And yes, Diary of a Wimpy Kid has quite a few reviews (I can make six if you like :-) ).
Onto the second comment - good aim, I think we should set it higher though! How about 1000 as a minimum - it may be hard but I think by the time we come to Christmas (if you celebrate it) we should have more than that really. Hope is key - the key is hope!
I think 1000 is definitely an achievable target; we average about 200 pages per year (since May 2008) so 1000 is above the average, but not stupid. :) Anyway, thanks for your encouragement!
Hello Harryvlas123, thanks for your contributions. Please could you let me know what ideas you've got? I'm always interested in hearing other users' thoughts.
As regards the admin - I'd like to wait a little to make sure you're committed to CBW before making you an admin. Otherwise, that should be fine.
I hope that's okay with you. Please let me know if you have any problems or any other thoughts!
Hello Harryvlas123, first of all, thanks so much for all your edits! It's so encouraging for me to see others editing here. And thanks for leaving me a message - not something many people do! I think it'd be good if you can sustain your edits a little longer, but I'm very happy to make you an admin soon. Two notes: "Reading age" refers to the age at which the child can read the book by himself; "Reading Aloud age" refers to the age at which an adult could read the book to the child. And pages should be entitled with the title only of the book, i.e. "Billionaire Boy", not "Billionaire Boy by David Walliams". I hope that makes sense! Again, thanks so much!
