Description

First in the series, about the author's life as a child in America in the 1800s. This true story of a hard-working family making a small, warm world for themselves in spite of their isolation, has been treasured by two decades of American children. "Each day has its own proper work," Laura's Ma used to say.

"Wash on Monday, Iron on Tuesday, Mend on Wednesday, Churn on Thursday, Clean on Friday, Bake on Saturday, Rest on Sunday"

-and that was the rhythm of life in the little log cabin in the Wisconsin Woods nearly eighty years ago, where Laura and her sister grew up learning to sow and harvest food (and incidentally prepare such delicious meals that your mouth will water as you read about them). But there were excitements as well; like the time Laura and her mother mistook a grizzly bear for the family cow, or when a panther chased Grandpa. And there were special delights for the little girls - smoking venison inside a hollow hickory, the day Pa found a tree full of honey, and Grandpa's sugaring-off party when the sap was running well from the maple trees and all the neighbours came to celebrate.

This true story of a hard-working family making a small, warm world for themselves in spite of their isolation has been treasured by two decades of American children and we think it will become as well loved in this country.

Reader's Reviews

1

Through reading this book, you are able to get a real feel of what life was like in a very different time and place. Although marketed to girls, I feel this book would appeal to both genders of children.

2

It feels if you are really in the book playing with Laura and Mary.
