Description

Jotham's Journey, sub-titled "A Storybook for Advent", is a Christian book written by Arnold Ytreeide. It is largely an exciting adventure story, following ten-year-old Jotham. The book is set in Israel at the time of Jesus' birth. The story is set around Advent, split into portions for each day during the celebration. Each day's reading ends on a cliff-hanger ending, often leaving Jotham in the most perilous of situations! There are also biblical notes after each day's reading. The book has two sequels, Bartholomew's Passage and Tabitha's Travels; they do not have Jotham as the main character, instead featuring a character met in Jotham's Journey.

Jotham was cross. It wasn't his fault. Nothing was his fault, in fact. It was all his father's. And that was why he was here, alone, in the dark and cold. Having decided to stay the night away, he begins to change his mind – but when he gets back to the place his father's tents were, they are no longer there. His family have gone, convinced he has been killed by wild animals. Will Jotham ever find them again?

Reader's Reviews

1

A fantastic adventure story: perfect for a family read-aloud in the run-up to Christmas.

2

Excellent read-aloud for a family for Advent. The story is quite long, and it's quite challenging to read every day during Advent; we carried on well into January! The tie-in to the Nativity story is cleverly done, and the children enjoyed spotting characters they recognised. Deca of Meggido makes a great villain, and the cliff-hanger endings were always greeted with cries of horror as I shut the book! Highly recommended.

Jotham's Journey and the other advent books by the same author are excellent for a family devotions during Advent. I highly recommend them.

Some tense and frightening moments might scare younger children. Violence is implied, and generally not described.
