This historical fiction novel is set just after the Norman Conquest of England. It tells of Edwin, a young Saxon, whose father was killed at Senlac in the dramatic showdown between King Harold of England, and William of Normandy. William won; and slowly the country is being taken over by the Normans. Edwin's older brother is lost fighting, and this means that Edwin is, technically, the lord of the town he lives in. But, almost immediately after his brother's disapparance, a Norman lord appears; he is the new lord of the town. Edwin also has Greyback, the offspring of a wolf and a dog. But Edwin struggles to adjust to his new life; and so does Greyback. Both boy and dog are faces with hard choices. Where do their true loyalties lie?
An excellently written book. However, I was disappointed that the author mixed both the human side of the book, and showing you thoughts of the dog, Greyback. The human bit was way better! Anyway, it was good, and worth reading. But Rosemary Sutcliff novels are better!

Some very minor violence.
