Description[]
The Well is a short historical fiction novel published in 1995, and written by Mildred D. Taylor. It tells the story of the Logan family. who have a well on their property in rural Mississippi and are happy to share the water with all their neighbours, regardless of their colour, when there is a drought. The issue of prejudice is explored as the story unfolds, covering the developing relationship between the Logan boys and other members of the community.

A helpful book to use to explore the topic of prejudice. Pacey, holds the attention, has boys as the main characters. Can be read as a stand-alone title, but the author's note at the start of the book shows how this is one of the stories which she was told in her childhood, and which "taught her a history about herself, a history not then written in textbooks". The human interest story is to the fore, and the issues need drawing out.

A very good book, for its length. Obviously, it couldn't fit as much in as the "main" novels in the series (Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Let the Circle Be Unbroken and The Road to Memphis), but it still was a good read. It did fail to reach a climactic ending as the other novels did, but that as well could be attributed to its length. Overall, very good.

The reader or the reader aloud would have to cope with the dialogue which is in Southern dialect. Not easy to read aloud!
