The second volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy-adventure The Lord of the Rings.

Frodo and the companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost their wizard, Gandalf, in the battle with an evil spirit in the Mines of Moria; and at the Falls of Rauros, Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape the rest of the company were attcked by Orcs.

Now Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone - alone, that is, saved for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.

Meanwhile, Merry and Pippin have been captured by the Orcs of Saruman the White, their former ally now turned against them -and it is up to Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas to try to save them from certain death.

A film version of The Two Towers was released in December 2002.

Fantasy fiction.

There are various beings, among them elves and angelic spirits (the "wizards", as well as Sauron), who have powers that could be termed magical.

Trees come to life.

There are lots of evil things attacking the various characters.

Quite a lot of general violence, but not horrible.
