Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is exciting, enthusiastic and attractive for your child to read, it is a short story about a dog and his friends. They go on a brilliant adventure embarking on something together as a friendship group. The author used amazing descriptive words, and includes rhyming on every page. Repetition on each page also happens throughout the book. Rhyming and repetition will greatly improve a child’s vocabulary, reading and spoken language. The book is small and practical to carry around so you can read it to your child anywhere! Children often love animals; this book includes all different breeds of dogs and is really good to broaden a child’s knowledge and understanding of this.
Pictures in this short story are interesting to have a conversation about. They are simple, but detailed enough to discuss. The colours and text in the book really keep a child involved! From reading this book I saw the message about friends being broadcasted, reading to a child can often give a hidden message about real life situations.
Overall this book is colourful, attractive and exciting for children, parents and more! Lynley Dodd continued her writing and created a collection of six Hairy Maclary books, you could possibly read a different book to your child each day throughout the week.
