Review: The Bone Season
Note: I read an uncorrected proof of The Bone Season. My thanks to Bloomsbury and Wikia for the copy. I have kept this review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are some minor disclosures of elements of the book’s world and story.
The Bone Season is the first novel in a planned seven-part series (a la Harry Potter), written by Samantha Shannon while still an undergraduate at Oxford University. The series was snapped up by Bloomsbury for a reported six-figure sum, and, in the modern world, film rights were bought before the first book was published, by Andy Serkis’ company Imaginarium. It’s fair to say the hype surrounding The Bone Season has been pretty intense. So, does it live up to those incredibly high expectations?

Inside Jokes
My sisters and I have a joke that we started since I was showing off how much literature I knew. I told them, "You don't know what's in Tarzan!" while making a waving hand gesture and putting emphasis on it, and they thought it was hilarious. The Tarzan series were probably among the books Elsie Dinsmore's father would have kept away from her. They aren't bad compared with some things today, but I'm sure they were considered bad back then. I've only read the first few and they seem alright enough so far, unless I missed a few pages when my tablet was acting up.

A Lot
I am happy to announce that I am working on writing my own book.
Even more happily, I'm rereading the Animal Land stories that I had read when I was little, reading The English Orphans, and still working through the Oz books.
Animal Land stories are great stories, though there isn't much information, that I could find, on them. The author constantly makes remarks on some foolish things humans do, and anyone can admit that the animals had a right to be critical of it.
I saw an old copy of The English Orphans once, but I didn't have any money with me at the time and then someone bought it before I could. I could tell by the way it looked that it was a good book, and I went home to find summaries and reviews of it, and it sounded like a good boo…
November 5
I can't believe I forgot what yesterday, November 5, was! Guy Fawke's Day was an important part of two stories that I know of: one about Paddington Bear and one about Mary Poppins. For Paddington Bear (I forgot which book for both of these, but...), he was learning about Guy Fawke's Day for the first time, really, because he was raised in darkest Peru with his Aunt. He saw a boy collecting clothes for a Guy, and he decided to gather clothes for one too. Unfortunately, the clothes he picked up belonged to his grouchy neighbor, who only set his best jacket on the porch to be picked up for the laundry. Mistmantle Returns!
My library did not have the rest of the Mistmantle books, so I had to postpone reading the last three of them. Now, however, I finally got them. Once I'm done with all of them, can I post up all their settings and characters?
Library Events
Library events are great for getting books at lower prices or even for free, while also having lots of fun! I hope its like that in most libraries. I got three books from the Oz series, a book of Kipling's short stories, Aesop's Fables, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and the Tale of Desperaux. Spending a total of six dollars altogether and getting the last two for free. No matter how many great books one can get for free on an electronic device, libraries and the feeling of owning a physical book to proudly display on a bookshelf are wonderful things.
Slowly
I will finish up the pages on The Secret Garden and The Children of Green Knowe, hopefully by the end of this week.
Progress
So, Jurassic Park is going to slow down some work on getting new books, but Urchin #2 and Tinker Bell #2 are now done! The Children of Green Knowe is going to be finished soon too. I really enjoy every book I read, and so I'd never read a book I wasn't absolutely sure I'd like. Tinker Bell was great, so was Urchin. Urchin finally knows his past and there's more information about other islands. Crispin will soon be married, and I guess he will have children, by the title of the third book. Sometimes I worry about that Hope, but we have hope for him to always land safely. Prilla is getting along great with her talent. Haffertee Hamster Diamond

Outline
Finally finished The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and it was a work of genius. Definitely a book worthy of being called a fairy tale and it definitely fits in with its time period. The 1800s and early 1900s was the height of true fairy tales collected/written by Grimm, Andersen, Joseph Jacobs, and Andrew Lang. I've always loved fairy tales and you can always notice their use of multiples of three (Dorothy's three companions, three requests of the flying monkeys, etc.) and how they always end up helping others from a kind heart and then they get things in return (Queen of the Field Mice, etc.) and how they fight numbers larger than their own and still win (crows and wolves, both of which were fourty to one). Lion of Oz
I remember seeing a movie of this book as a kid and now I've finally read half of it. It is really the first Oz book I've ever read and I chose it because it was the one where the Wizard first came. A prequel should be read first, I guess. While the beginning was kind of abrupt with the Lion immediately becoming the Witch's servant in collecting the Flower of Oz, it does make sense since no one else would do it. It is the saddest thing to see that such a brave lion would turn into the Cowardly Lion and that the Wizard never recognized his dear friend ever again.
I'm a bit under the weather, but the book is an easy read.
Jack and Jill
See the title? I guess that maybe once again Louisa May Alcott has a book filled with metaphors, similes, and allusions. I'm going to start reading her book, entitled "Jack and Jill". While I usually like to know something about a book before I begin, this time I didn't. Can't wait to find out something so I can tell it in my next blog!
Halfway Through
Well, this book has been exciting so far. Though I think it was obvious it was Captain Husk from the beginning. The only problems for children with the book so far is the descriptions of the evil in the dungeon, the drugging of the culled babies, the drinking of wine, and the birth of Urchin. There are some similarities to the Redwall books, with the anthropomorphic animals, chapter pictures, Medieval look, superstitions, and types of animals. It makes me so glad to read it! I can't wait to see what happens next, and as soon as I do, I will write the summary. I've already started the characters, still an incomplete list for now, though. Book One of The Mistmantle Chronicles
(Just a blog about the book before I start to read it.) I actually only liked this wiki when I saw the sections about similar books. Namely, when I looked at some Redwall pages, I saw the Mistmantle books listed. I can't wait to start reading it and write another halfway blog! I do so love squirrels!
The Importance of Being Earnest
I'm pretty sure this book could count as a children's book. Maybe for older children because of whatever reason, but the book is funny, critical of the people of its time period, but funny. I saw two movie versions of it this summer, and I guess that because it is a play that the movies copied the exact words with ease. Most movies rewrite books completely (like How to Train Your Dragon). In this, I can picture the exact scenes of the movie with the exact voices and exact facial expressions as I read their exact words. Just finished reading Aunt Augusta's weird interrogation.
Paddington Bear
Now media characters usually try to be accident prone to give some humor and delight the audience. I may be one of the few people who know someone who gets irritated at those people/animals. This is why Paddington Bear is a great choice for the best of both. Paddington Bear has, indeed, a knack for getting in trouble. Yet he is intelligent and ambitious (especially at loose ends). It may get tough for a small bear's paws to do things meant for human beings, but in the end, everyone benefits from the catastrophe. Some ways seem random, like they could ever work! Still, they have some logic to them, and it makes Paddington lovable to his audience. At least it explains why the Browns love him, and even (because it seems treacherous to say the…
