Celeste is a mouse plagued by two rats, named Trixie and Illianna, who take food from her all the time. They all live in the house of the Pirrie family, where Mr. Audobon came to visit while teaching Eliza Pirrie. One day, a cat chases Celeste and the two rats until Celeste runs upstairs to hide. Soon Celeste meets Mr. Audobon's apprentice, Joseph, and the many animals that the two catch during the story, becoming friends with them and Joseph. Celeste finds ways of getting the animals to remain still in stunning poses so that Mr. Audobon doesn't have to kill them and pin them up like he usually had to.
Eventually, Celeste loses her friend Joseph when he and Mr. Audobon have to leave, but she is able to survive it. She keeps up very valuable friendships with the wild birds she had met and she even starts new friendships with their friends.
